Building a hall bench
Â
The first step of the project is to build the sides of the modern hall bench. Therefore, build the components out of 1×14 lumber or out of 3/4″ plywood. Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper and repeat the process for the opposite side.
Â
Â
The next step of the project is to build the frame of the bench. Therefore, cut the bottom component and secure it to the sides by using 1 1/4″ screws and glue. Align the edges with great care, make sure the corners are square before inserting the galvanized screws.
Â
Â
Continue the woodworking projects by fitting the 1×3 supports to the top of the structure. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the sides by using 1 1/4″ screws. Check if the corners are square and add glue for extra-rigidity.
Â
Â
One of the last steps of the project is to attach the seat to the bench structure. In order to secure the seat to the frame, we recommend you to drill pocket holes through the supports and to insert 1 1/4″ screws. Align the edges and add glue to the joints. Use a spirit level to check if the seat is perfectly horizontal.
Â
Â
If you want to enhance the look of the modern bench, you could fit 1×2 trims to the sides. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to choose 1/4″ thick trims and to cut their ends at 45 degrees. Secure the trims into place using brad nails and glue. Leave no gaps between the components.
Â
Â
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
