Building the frame of the hutch

Building the frame of the hutch

Firstly, you need to build the frame of the storage unit out of 1×12 slats. Cut the components at the right size after taking accurate measurements. Use a good circular saw with a sharp blade to make the cuts and smooth the edges with sandpaper. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical supports and fit them into place. Insert 1 1/4″ screws and add glue to create rigid joints. Make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the trims to the front of the hutch

Build the trims out of 1×2 lumber and attach them to the front face of the top hutch by using bread nails and glue. You could also lock the trims together by drilling pocket holes at both ends of the vertical components and by inserting 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square.

Build the back out of 1/4″ plywood and smooth the edges before attaching it to the back of the unit using brad nails. Make sure the edges are flush before inserting the nails. Leave no gaps between the components.

Fit the 1×2 trim to the top of the storage unit to get a professional result. Drill pocket holes along the long edge and secure it to the top component by using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess by using a damp cloth.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the top bed hutch.
