Building a wine cabinet

Building the sides

Building the sides

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the wine cabinet. Build the legs out of 2×2 lumber, the bottom support out of 2×2 lumber and the top support out of 1×2 lumber. Cut the components at the right size, smooth the edges with fine grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal supports, align the edges with attention and insert 1 1/4″ screws through the 1×2 lumber and 2 1/2″ screws through the 2×2 lumber. Drill pocket holes along the edges of the plywood panel and secure it to the frame by using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Fitting the back

Fitting the back

Next, you have to assemble the frame of the wine cabinet by fitting the back to the sides. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal supports and secure them to the legs using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and check if the corners are square. Drill pocket holes along the four edges of the plywood panel, fit it to the frame and insert 1 1/4″ screws to create durable bonds.

Attaching the bottom

Attaching the bottom

Build the bottom of the cabinet out of 2×2 lumber and 3/4″ plywood. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and along the four edges of the plywood piece. Align everything with great care and secure the components to the cabinet using 1 1/4″ screws. Use a spirit level to make sure the bottom is perfectly horizontal.

Building the partitions

Building the partitions

Build the partitions for the wine cabinet out of 3/4″ plywood. Mark the cut lines on the plywood pieces and get the job done with a circular saw. Make parallel cuts inside the marked areas and clean the recess with a chisel. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the partitions.

Assemble the partitions together and fit them to the wine cabinet. Leave no gaps between the components and insert 1 1/4″ screws to create rigid joints. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Attaching the top

Build the top of the cabinet out of 3/4″ plywood and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Align the edges with great care and insert 1 1/4″ brad nails to secure it to the cabinet. Add glue to enhance the bond of the components.

Building the drawer

Building the drawer

Build the drawer out of 1×4 slats and the bottom out of 3/4″ plywood. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the side slats and secure them to the perpendicular components by using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Drill pocket holes along the edges of the bottom and secure it to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws and glue.

Fitting the drawer

Fitting the drawer

Fit the drawer to the opening and leave 1/8″ around it, as described in the diagram. Wax the bottom of the drawer with attention before sliding the drawer into the opening.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the wine cabinet.
