Building a media console hutch
Â
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the console table hutch. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the frame out of 1×12 lumber. Take accurate measurements and cut the components at the right size. Drill pocket holes at the top of the vertical components and secure them to the top using 1 1/4″ screws.
Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the shelf and of the bottom support and lock them to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws. Align the edges with great care and leave no gaps between the components.
Â
Â
Build the back of the hutch out of 1/4″ plywood and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Secure the back to the frame using finishing nails and glue. Make sure the edges are flush before inserting the nails.
Â
Â
Attach the trims to the front of the hutch, as described in the diagram. Use glue and brad nails to lock the trims into place.
Â
Â
Fit the 1×2 trims to the top of the hutch, as described in the diagram. Cut the trims and secure them to the hutch using finishing nails and glue. Make sure there are no gaps between the components and they are perfectly horizontal.
Â
Â
One of the last steps of the project is to attach the trims to the top of the hutch. Add glue and drill pocket holes through the trims, before fitting them to the hutch using 1 1/4″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components and remove the excess glue with a damp cloth.
Â
Â
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
