Building a folding divider

Building the components

The first step of the project is to build the components fro the room dividers. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to build the components out of 2×3 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the components and make the notches using a circular saw. Make several parallel cuts (3/4″ deep) inside the marked lines and remove the excess materials with a chisel. Smooth the recesses using sandpaper.

Assembling the panels

The next step of the woodworking project is to assemble the panels. Add glue to the joints, drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws to reinforce the joints, after making sure the corners are square. Clamp the components together for several hours, until the glue dries out.

Assembling the room divider

Assembling the room divider is one of the last steps of the woodworking project. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to lock the panels together by using piano hinges or metal hinges. Align the panels at both ends and leave no significant gaps between them. Attach the fabric to the panels and stretch it properly before securing it to the frame by using staples.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the final touches. Therefore, you need fill all the holes with a good filler and let the compound to dry out properly, before sanding the wooden surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
