Building a garden chair
Materials
- A – 4 pieces of 2×3 lumber – 24″ long LEGS
- B – 2 pieces of 2×3 lumber – 22″ long, 3 pieces – 17 3/4″ long SEAT FRAME
- C – 11 pieces of 1×4 lumber – 39 3/4″ long SEAT
- D – 2 pieces of 2×3 lumber – 18 1/4″ long, 2 pieces of 1×4 lumber – 18″ long SUPPORTS
- E – 2 pieces of 2×3 lumber – 24″ long BACKREST SUPPORTS
- F – 7 pieces of 1×3 lumber – 19″ long BACKREST
- 4 pieces of 2×3 lumber – 8′
- 3 pieces of 1×3 lumber – 8′
- 1 piece of 1×4 lumber – 4′
- 2 1/2″ screws, 1 5/8″ screws
- 2″ nails
- wood filler , wood glue, stain/paint

Building a garden chair
Building the legs
The first step of the project is to build the legs for the chair. Use 2×3 lumber for the wood pieces. Use a saw to make angle cuts to both ends of the pieces. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper for a professional result.
Assembling the sides of the chair
The next step of the project is to lay the legs on a level surface. Build the top support from 2×3 lumber and make angle cuts at both ends. Align the edges with attention and add glue to the joints. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock everything together tightly.
Building the seat frame
The next step of the project is to build the seat frame. Cut all the components from 2×3 lumber at the right dimensions, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the 22″ long components and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Make sure the corners are square and align everything with attention.
Assembling the frame of the chair
The next step of the project is to attach the legs to the seat frame. Align everything with attention, drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the seat frame.
Backrest supports
Build the backrest supports for the garden chair from 2×3 lumber. Use a jigsaw to round the exposed corner of the support.
Fitting the backrest supports
Fit the backrest supports to the frame of the garden chair, as shown in the diagram. Align everything with attention, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the backrest supports into place tightly.
Fitting the seat slats
Fit the 1×3 slats to the seat of the chair. Place a piece of 1/4″ plywood between the slats to create even gaps. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the slats into place tightly.
Fitting the backrest slats
Fit the 1×3 slats to the backrest of the garden chair in the same manner described above.
Fitting the armrests
Use 1×4 lumber for the armrests. Use a jigsaw to make round cuts to the ends. Use 2″ nails to secure the slats into place tightly.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper.
