How to build a deck box
Â
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the side frames of the deck box. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to build the corner legs out of 2×2 lumber and the top and bottom supports out of 2×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs.
Â
Â
After building the side frames, you need to assemble the panels. Therefore, cut several 1×3 slats at the right size and drill pocket holes at both ends. Fit the slats to the frames and lock them into place using 1 1/4″ screws.
Â
Â
Next, build the front and the back faces of the deck box using the instructions described in the diagram. Cut the top and bottom supports out of 2×4 lumber and the panels out of 1×3 slats. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 1×3 slats and secure them to the supports using 1 1/4″ screws and glue. Leave no gaps between the slats, for a professional result.
Â
Assembling the deck box
Â
Â
After building the four sides of the deck box, we recommend you to assemble them together tightly. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to drill pocket holes at both ends of the front and back supports. Align the edges with attention and insert 2 1/2″ screws through the supports into the corner legs. Add glue to the joints and check if the corners are right-angled.
Â
Â
Build the bottom of the deck box out of 3/4′ plywood. Cut the component at the right dimensions and drill pocket holes along the sides using a jig and a drill machinery. Fit the piece to the deck box and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the supports. Make sure the bottom is perfectly horizontal and leave no gaps between the components. Fitting the bottom will also help you ensure the corners are right-angled.
Â
Building the box lid
Â
Building the lid for the deck box is a straight-forward process, but you need to pay attention to a few aspects before starting the assembly. Build the front and back components out of 2×2 lumber and the sides out of 1×2 lumber.
Next, drill pilot holes through the sides and insert 1 1/4″ screws to get a rigid frame. Make sure the corners are right-angled and add glue to the joints.
Â
Â
In order to enhance the rigidity of the frame, you need to fit 1×2 supports. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and insert 1 1/4″ screws to the frame to create a rigid structure. Also, add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled.
Â
Â
Build the panels out of 1×3 lumber. Cut the components at the right size and drill pocket holes at both ends. Fit the slats to the frame and secure them into place using 1 1/4″ screws and glue.
Â
Â
After assembling the lid of the deck box, we recommend you to fit it to the structure, making sure all the edges are perfectly aligned. Use hinges to lock the lid to the back of the deck box. You could use several hinges to make sure it will open and close easily or a piano hinge.
Â
Â
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours. Â Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue, if necessary.
