Before starting the actual construction project, we recommend you to plan everything, as to save money and to keep the costs under control. In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.
If you don’t have a rich expertise in woodworking field, you should ask a friend to give you a hand with the project. There are many things that you could go wrong, so make sure you plan everything and invest in quality materials. Select the lumber with attention, making sure the components are perfectly straight and in a very good condition. Use a carpentry square to check if the corners are right-angled. Building a vanity
Â
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the vanity. Build the legs out of 2×2 lumber and the panels out of 3/4″ plywood. Drill pocket holes along the sides of the plywood panels and secure them to the legs with 1 1/4″ screws.
Â
Â
Continue the project by fitting the back component, as well as the front supports. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the components, take accurate measurements and lock them into place with 1 1/4″ screws and glue.
Â
Â
Building the drawer is a straight-forward process, but you need to work with attention and to cut the components at the right size. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 1×4 slats and lock them together with galvanized screws. Build the bottom of the drawer out of 3/4″ plywood, drill pocket holes along the edges and secure it to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws.
Â
Â
Center the frame of the vanity to the tabletop, drill pocket holes through the supports and insert 1 1/3″ screws. Add glue to enhance the bond of the joints.
Â
Â
Fit the drawer into place and secure it to the frame using metal slides. Make sure the drawer opens and closes properly and there is a 1/8″ gap around the edges.
Â
Â
One of the last steps of the project is to build the frame of the mirror. Build the bottom and the side components out of 1×3 lumber and the top component out of 1×6 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and secure them to the perpendicular components with 1 1/4″ screws.
Â
Â
Make 1/4″x1/4″ rabbets along the interior faces of the frame, by using a router with a bit.
Â
Â
Cut the mirror at the right size and fit it inside the frame. Lock the mirror into place by mirror adhesive or silicone.
Â
Â
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
