Materials

  • A – 4 pieces of 2×2 lumber – 14″ long, 4 pieces – 48″ long FRAME
  • B – 6 pieces of 2×2 lumber – 27″ long FRAME
  • C – 2 piece of 2×2 lumber – 30 3/8″ long, 4 pieces – 14 1/4″ long TRIMS
  • D – 2 piece of 1×2 lumber – 30″ long, 2 pieces – 48″ long, 1 piece of 3/4″ plywood – 28 1/2″x46 1/2″ long TABLETOP

  • 7 pieces of 2×2 lumber – 8 ft
  • 3 pieces of 1×2 lumber – 8 ft
  • 1 piece of 3/4″ plywood – 4’x4′
  • 2 1/2″ screws
  • 1 1/4″ screws
  • glue, stain
  • wood filler

Tools

  • Safety gloves, glasses
  • Miter saw, jigsaw
  • Chalk line, tape measure, spirit level, carpentry pencil

  • Apply several coats of wood stain to the wooden components

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the coffee table. Cut the components at the right size and lock them together with galvanized screws. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical components and secure them to the bottom and top components. Check if the screws are square and add glue to the joints.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the components and lock the sides of the table together by inserting 1 1/4″ screws. Mare sure the corners are square.

If you want to enhance the look of the coffee table we recommend you to fit X-shaped trims to the sides of the structure. Make the angle cuts and secure the components into place by inserting 1 1/4″ screws.

Fit the trims into place with attention before inserting the screws. Add glue to the joints in order to create a rigid structure.

Drill pocket holes through the frame and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the tabletop. Add waterproof glue to the joints in order to create rigid joints.

One of the last steps of the project is to fit the 1×2 trims to the tabletop. Cut both ends of the trims at 45 degrees before attaching them into place. Add waterproof glue to the joints and drill pocket holes along the edges of the tabletop. Insert the 1 1/4″ screws into the trims to create rigid joints.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the table.
