Building a queen size bed frame
Â
The first of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the queen bed frame. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to cut the legs out of 2×2 lumber. Build the main frame out of 2×4 lumber, as shown in the plans. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the short components and secure them to the legs with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to enhance the rigidity of the structure. Place a spirit level on top of the frame to check if it is level.
Â
Â
Attach the 1×10 side rails to the exterior of the frame, as shown in the plans. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the components and secure it to the legs with 1 1/4″ screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to create rigid joints. Place a spirit level on top of the rails to make sure they are perfectly level.
Â
Â
Fitting the 1×4 slats to the cleats is a straight forward process, as you just need to attach them and make sure there are equally-spaced. Leave 1 1/2″ between the slats and secure them to the cleats with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws.
Â
Â
Building the headboard is easy, so make sure you secure the 1×6 lumber between the legs. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats, make sure there are no gaps between them, and secure them to the legs with 1 1/4″ screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints in order to create a rigid structure.
Â
Â
Attach the 2×4 and 2×6 trims over the top of the headboard, as shown in the image. Drill pilot holes and secure them into place with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Apply waterproof glue to the joints, in order to create a rigid structure.
Â
Â
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
