This step by step diy woodworking project is about media cabinet plans. If you want to learn how to build a beautiful media center, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article and to check out the related projects. There are many storage projects featured on our site, so don’t be afraid to browse through the rest of the woodworking plans.

Before starting the actual construction project, we recommend you to plan everything, as to save money and to keep the costs under control. Adjust the size and the design of the media center to suit your needs. In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.

It is essential to invest in high quality materials, that are also water-resistant, such as pressure-treated lumber. Cut the components at the right size by using a circular saw and smooth the cut edges with a sand block. Don’t forget to ask a skilled friend to assist you during the project, especially if you don’t have a large expertise in the field. You need someone to hold the components into place, while you drive the screws in. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building a media cabinet

Building the base

Building the base

The first step of the project is to build the frame for the base of the media cabinet. Cut the components out of 1×8 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the lower horizontal components and at the top ends of the vertical components. Make sure the edges are flush, the corners are square and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock them together tightly. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Next, fit the partitions to the base of the cabinet. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the partitions and secure them to the frame by using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.

Building the middle tower

Building the middle tower

Next, build the tower for the media cabinet as described in the diagram. Cut the components at the right dimensions and lock them together tightly. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical components and at both ends of the lower shelf. Align the edges with great care and lock them together using 1 1/4″ galvanized screws and waterproof glue. Secure the tower unit to the media base using screws after checking if the edges are flush.

Fitting the side shelves

Next, build the side storage units and attach them to the media center. Cut the components out of 1×6 lumber and smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical components and at both ends of the shelves. In addition, drill pocket holes at one end of the top component. Align the components with great care and lock them together using 1 1/4″ screws. Lock the shelves to the structure tightly.

Attaching the back

Build the back for the media cabinet out of 1/4″ plywood. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and secure it to the back of the structure with finishing nails. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Attaching the baseboard

Next, attach the 1×6 baseboard to the media center and secure it to the frame using brad nails and glue. Afterwards, enhance the rigidity of the structure by fitting 1×2 supports to the top of the structure. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the front of the structure using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Fitting the nosing

If you want to enhance the look of the small entertainment center, you could install 1×1 nosing to the top edges of the components.

Fitting the partitions

Next, fit the 1×8 partitions to the base of the media cabinet. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the components and secure them to the structure using 1 1/4″ screws and glue. Check if the corners are square before continuing the woodworking project.

Attaching the cabinet doors

Attaching the cabinet doors

Fit the doors to the base of the cabinet, as described in the diagram. Leave 1/8″ around the doors and use appropriate trims to secure them to the frame of the media cabinet. Attach 1×2 (1/4″ thick) trims to the door and handles.

Fitting the small doors

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. If you want to enhance the storage space, you could make a few items.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the media cabinet plans.
