This step by step diy woodworking project is about kids bench plans. If you want to build a really simple bench for your kids, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. In addition, don’t forget to take a close look to the rest of the woodworking plans, as there might be other plans that could add value to your home or backyard.

There are many bench designs you could choose from, so make sure you select several alternatives before taking the final decision. Don’t be afraid to adjust the size and the design of the bench to your needs, before starting the actual assembly project. There are many things that you could add to the bench, such a nice partition or drawings to both sides of the kids wooden bench.

Generally speaking, you need to invest in high quality lumber, such as pine, cedar or redwood. Cut all the components at the right size and pre-drill them before inserting the screws, if you want to get the job done in a professional manner. Add glue to the joints if you want to enhance the rigidity of the frame. Align the components at both ends and check if the corners are right-angled. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building the legs of the bench

Building the legs of the bench

The first step of the project is to build the sides of the kids bench. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to build the legs out of 1×12 slats. Mark the cut lines on the slats and get the job done with a jigsaw.

Attaching the bottom shelf

Attaching the bottom shelf

The next step is to attach the shelf to the bottom of the bench. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the shelf and align it properly before inserting the 1 1/4″ screws into the legs. Use a carpentry square to check if the corners are right-angled.

Building the supports

Building the supports

Continue the project by attaching the trims to the bottom shelf and the supports to the top of the legs. Cut the pieces of 1×2 lumber at the right size and lock them into place with galvanized screws. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the trims and insert the screws into the legs. Add glue to enhance the bond of the joints.

Attaching the bench seat

One of the last steps of the project is to cut a piece of 1×12 lumber and to attach it on top of the frame. You could either insert finishing nails through the seat into the frame or drill pocket holes through the support into the seat.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the wooden bench.
