This step by step diy project is about how to build bathroom shelves. Building a shelf for your bathroom will create storage space for your towels or bathrobes and it is a good opportunity to build something with your own hands, especially if you are a woodworking beginner. Taking into account this is a straight forward project, any person with basic skills can get the job done in just a few hours.

In order to build a durable bathroom shelf, we recommend you to buy quality materials. Therefore, pine boards are a great choice if they are in a good condition and perfectly straight. In order to lock them together, we consider that using a pocket hole system would be a great idea, as it creates rigid joints and the head of the screws aren’t visible. Add glue to enhance the rigidity of the joints.

Align the boards at both ends before driving in the wood screws. If you work by yourself, you could temporarily lock the boards into place with several C-clamps. Use a spirit level to check if the shelves are horizontal. In addition, it would be a great idea to check the corners for squareness, using a carpentry square. Sand the wooden surface thoroughly, before applying the stain coats. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building the frame of the shelves

The first step of the project is to build the frame of the bathroom shelves. As you can see in the image, this projects requires several 1×8 slats. After cutting the four components at the right size, we recommend you to drill pocket holes at both ends.

Align the components with great care before driving in the 1 1/4” screws. Add glue to enhance the bond of the joints.

Instaling the shelves

Installing the shelves

The next step of the woodworking project is to install the shelves into place. As you can easily notice in the plans, there are just several components to be installed, so you should get the job done pretty quickly.

Smart Tip: Use metal pins to support the shelves or drill pocket holes and insert 1 1/4” screws. Use a spirit level to check if shelf is level, before driving in the screws.

Attaching the back of the shelves

Continue the project by installing the back. In order to get the job done, we recommend you to use 1/4” plywood. After cutting the piece of plywood to the right size, using a circular saw, we recommend you to place over the framing.

Smart Tip: Align the plywood with great care, making sure it is flush with the exterior edges of the framing. Drive in 1 1/4” nails to secure the piece of plywood into place tightly, every 2”.

Fitting the front trims

Fitting the front trims

Although this step is optional, we consider that adding 1×2 trims to the front face of the shelves would add character to your project. The easiest method to get the job done is to build the frame on a level surface. Drill pocket holes and insert 1 1/4” screws to lock the trims together.

Smart Tip: Align the trims to the shelves, add glue and insert 1 14” finishing nails to lock the components into place.

Installing the top trims

Installing the top trims

One of the last steps of the project is to attach the top trims. As you can see in the image, you should use 1×2 lumber to build the trims. Make sure you align the trims properly, as they should overhang 3/4″ on front and on both sides. Add glue and drive in 1 1/4” finishing nails to lock them into place.

Last but not least, there are a few touches you have to take care of.  First of all, you should fill all the holes with wood filler and let the compound to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper and remove the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to enhance the look of the shelves and to protect the wooden components from decay. If you want to get this plan as a PDF file, please take a look over the GET PDF PLANS button bellow. Thank you for the support!
