Building the sides

Building the sides

The first step of the indoor woodworking project is to build the sides of the hall tree. Therefore, mark the cut lines on the plywood sheet and get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Fitting slats to the back of the hall tree

Next, secure the sides of the hall tree together by fitting the back slats. Use 1×8 slats to create the structure. After cutting the components at 22 1/2″, you need to drill pocket holes at both ends. Fit the slats between the sides and secure them into place using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and leave no gaps between them.

Fitting the bottom support

In order to enhance the rigidity of the structure, we recommend you to fit a support to the front of the hall tree. Therefore, cut the support at the right size and drill pocket holes at both ends before attaching them to the sides using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints.

Fitting the cleats

Fitting the cleats

Attach the 1×1 cleats to the interior faces of the hall tree, as described in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the cleats and secure them to the sides using 1 1/4″ nails. Use a spirit level to make sure the cleats are perfectly horizontal.

Next, attach the 3/4″ plywood shelves to the cleats. In order to get a professional result, you need to make sure there are no gaps between the components. Insert brad nails to secure the shelves to the cleats.

Fitting the back trims

In order to enhance the look of your project, we recommend you to install 1×3 trims as in the diagram. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the trims and secure them to the structure by using 1 1/4″ screws and waterproof glue.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Attach the hangers to the hall tree, after aligning them with great care. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the wood hall tree.
