This step by step diy woodworking project is about hall tree bench. There are many things that you could go wrong, so make sure you plan everything and invest in quality materials. Building a hall tree

Materials

A – 2 pieces of 1×4 lumber – 59 3/4″ long, 2 pieces – 39 1/2″ long, 2 pieces – 52 3/4″ long FRAME
B – 14 pieces of 1×6 lumber – 46 1/2″ long PANEL
C – 1 piece of 1×2 lumber – 46 1/2″ long, 1 piece pf 2×3 lumber – 48″ long TRIMS

Building a hall tree

Building the frame of the tree hall

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the hall tree. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to cut the components out of 1×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and secure them to the side components. Make sure the corners are right-angled and add glue to enhance the rigidity of the joints. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the partitions and secure them to the frame. Leave no gaps between the components.

Fitting the back slats

The next step of the project is to attach the 1×6 slats to the back of the hall tree. As you can notice in the plans, we recommend you to align the components at both ends and to secure them to the frame by using 1 1/4″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components and smooth the edges with sandpaper. Make sure you lock all the slats together. Drill pocket holes along the bottom edge and insert 1 1/4″ screws.

Fitting the trim

Attach a 1×2 trim to the top of the components and secure it into place using 1 1/4″ screws and glue. Leave no gaps between the components.

Cut the top trim out of 2×3 lumber and attach it into place, as described in the image.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the bench.
