Building the back legs [5]

Building the back legs

This first step of the  woodworking project is about building the back legs of the chair. As you can notice in the plans, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on the piece of lumber, making sure the legs are 1 1/2″ thick from top to bottom. Use a jigsaw to get the job done and smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Building the back rest [6]

Building the backrest of the kitchen chair is a straight forward process. Just secure two piece of 1×3 lumber between the back legs. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them into place with 1 1/4″ pocket screws. Afterwards, drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical components and lock them into place with 1 1/4″ screws. Place the 1×2 components equally-spaced.

Continue the project by attaching the front legs to the structure of the kitchen chair. Therefore, we recommend you to cut the supports out of 1×3 lumber to the right size. Drill pocket holes at both ends, align them with great care and secure them into place with galvanized screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled before driving the screws into the legs.

Attaching the bottom braces [8]

Attach 2×2 braces to the bottom of the legs, as shown in the plans. Work with attention and make sure there are no gaps between the components.

Attaching the seat [9]

Cut a piece of 1×20 lumber or 3/4″ plywood to the dimensions described in the image. Smooth the cut edges and make sure you create two notches to the back of the seat, otherwise it won’t fit into place.  Secure the seat to the frame of the chair by using 1 1/4″ screws, making sure you leave no gaps between the components.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the wooden chair.
