Building the side components

Building the side components

The  first step of the project is to build the sides of the magazine rack. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to cut out the top corner of the 1×6 lumber with a circular saw. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Fitting the shelves

Fitting the shelves

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the shelves and secure them to the side components with galvanized screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the galvanized screws. Work with attention and place the shelves equally-spaced, in order to create a symmetrical result.

Fitting the supports

Fitting the supports

Fit the 1×2 rails to the front face of the rack, as shown in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the rails and secure them to the sides with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues. Fit a support to the top of the rack. Drill a pilot holes and insert a screws directly into a stud, in order to create a rigid joint.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the rack.
