Building the bed frame

Building the bed frame

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the bed. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to build the frame out of 1×10 lumber. Cut the components at the right size and make sure the corners are square before inserting the screws. Drill three pocket holes at both ends of the side slats and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular components. Add glue to enhance the strength of the joints. Make sure the edges are flush.

Fitting the slats

Fitting the slats

Continue the woodworking project by fitting the 2×4 cleats to the bed frame, as shown in the diagram. Align the side cleats at both ends and secure them into place with 2″ screws. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the middle cleat and secure it to the frame with 2 1/2″ screws.

Fitting the legs

Fitting the legs

Cut several pieces of 2×4 lumber at 7″ and secure them to the corners for the frame with galvanized screws. In order to support the weight of the bed in a professional manner, we recommend you to fit another legs to the middle cleat, as shown in the plans. Work with attention and take accurate measurements before inserting the screws, to get the job done properly.

Fitting the support slats

Place the 1×4 slats over the cleats, making sure they are placed equally-spaced. Drill pocket holes through the slats and secure them into place with 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the surface is perfectly plane, otherwise the mattress won’t fit into place properly.
