This step by step woodworking project is about wooden diy mailbox post plans. If you search for a simple mailbox post design, these plans might be what you are looking for. I have come with with this project so you can save money and get the job done in just one weekend. In addition, you can make adjustments to my design so it suits your needs. See my other DIY projects HERE.
We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a mailbox post
The first step of the project is to build the vertical post for the project. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to set the posts 24″ into the ground. In addition, you need to make a 1 3/4″ deep notch into the post. Mark the area and then make parallel cuts with a circular saw. Clean the recess with a chisel and smooth the area with sandpaper.
Next, build the horizontal support for the mailbox post. Use a saw to make the recess to the support. Take accurate measurements and then smooth the area with sandpaper.
Dig the hole into the ground and then fit the posts into place. Plumb the posts with a spirit level and then lock it temporarily into place with braces. Fill the hole with concrete and let it dry out for a few days.
Fit the support to the posts and make sure the corners are square. Add glue to the joint and then drill pilot holes through the support. Insert 3 1/2″ screws to lock the support into place tightly.
Fit the 4×4 brace to lock the horizontal support into place tightly. Use a saw to make 45 degree cuts to both ends of the brace and then secure it into place tightly with screws.
Cut a piece of 1×8 lumber to 7 1/2″ long. Center the slat to the top of the post and then lock it into place with nails. Add glue to the joint.
Fit a 2×6 piece of lumber to the top of the trim. Center it into place and then lock it into place with nails and glue.
Last but not least, fit a piece of 1×4 lumber to the top of the mailbox post. Use glue and nails to secure the piece into place tightly.
Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to enhance the look of the post and to protect the components from the weather elements. Apply a few coats of lacquer to seal the finish.
