This step by step diy woodworking project is about garden chair plans. If you want to build a nice wooden chair for your garden, we recommend you to take a look over the diagrams and instructions shown in the article. There are many outdoor furniture plans on our website, so make sure you take a look over the rest of the options.

Before starting the actual construction project, we recommend you to plan everything, as to save money and to keep the costs under control. Adjust the size and the design of the garden chair to suit your needs. In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.

It is essential to invest in high quality materials, that are also water-resistant, such as pressure-treated lumber. Cut the components at the right size by using a circular saw and smooth the cut edges with a sand block. Don’t forget to ask a skilled friend to assist you during the project, especially if you don’t have a large expertise in the field. You need someone to hold the components into place, while you drive the screws in.

How to build a garden chair

Building the back leg

Building the back leg

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the back leg of the garden chair. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to mark the cut lines on the 2×12 slat and get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the edges with fine grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Assembling the sides of the chair

Next, you need to build the front legs, out of 2×6 lumber. Cut the component at the right size and smooth the edges thoroughly. Next, you have to lock the legs together by fitting the diagonal brace.

Fitting the diagonal braces

Fitting the diagonal braces

Build the diagonal brace out of 2×4 lumber. Mark the cut lines with great care and make sure the angle cuts are accurate, otherwise the components wont fit into place. Install braces on both sides of the legs, if you want to get a professional result. Drill pilot holes through the braces and through the legs and lock them together using 5″ carriage bolts.

Fitting the top braces

Afterwards, install the top braces to the sides of the garden chair. Cut the braces at the right size and fit them to the top of the structure. Drill pilot holes through the components and lock them together with 5″ carriage bolts. Check if the top braces are perfectly horizontal before inserting the bolts, in order to get a rigid structure.

Installing the back support

Installing the back support

Lock the two sides of the chair together by installing the 2×4 brace to the back of the structure. Drill pilot holes through the brace and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the sides. Make sure the corners are right-angled and leave no gaps between the components.

Fitting the support

Fitting the support

Install a 2×2 support to the bottom of the chair, in order to enhance the rigidity of the structure. Drill pocket holes at both ends and secure them to the sides using 2 1/2″ screws.

Fitting the seat slats

Next, build the seat of the garden chair. In order to get a professional result, you need to fit two 2×6 slats and one 2×4 slat to the frame of the chair. Place the slats equally-spaced and secure them to the supports using 2 1/2″ screws. Pre-drill the slats before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.

Fit the slats to the backrest, as described in the diagram. Center the slats to the supports in order to get a professional result. Drill pilot holes through the slats and insert 2 1/2″ screws.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Check out the rest of the animal projects, to see more ways to improve the look of your garden.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the garden chair house.
