This step by step diy woodworking project is about deck planter plans. If you want to learn how to build a beautiful deck planter, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article and to check out the related projects. There are many storage projects featured on our site, so don’t be afraid to browse through the rest of the woodworking plans.

Before starting the actual construction project, we recommend you to plan everything, as to save money and to keep the costs under control. Adjust the size and the design of the deck planter to suit your needs. In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.

It is essential to invest in high quality materials, that are also water-resistant, such as pressure-treated lumber. Cut the components at the right size by using a circular saw and smooth the cut edges with a sand block. Don’t forget to ask a skilled friend to assist you during the project, especially if you don’t have a large expertise in the field. You need someone to hold the components into place, while you drive the screws in. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building a deck planter

Building the side walls

Building the side walls

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the deck planter. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to build the panel out of 3/4″ plywood and the slats out of 2×4 slats. Cut the plywood piece at the right size and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Attach the slats to the panel making sure you place them equally-spaced and the edges are aligned properly. Add glue to the joints and insert 1 1/4″ screws from the inside into the slats.

Next, build the front and the back faces of the planter in the same manner described above.  Cut the slats at the right size and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to enhance the bond. Remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Assembling the frame

Assembling the frame

Continue the project by assembling the deck planter together. Therefore, build the corner posts out of 4×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes along both sides of the panels and secure them to the posts using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled.

Attaching the cleats

Attaching the cleats

Fit 2×2 cleats to the interior faces of the planter. Adjust the height at which you place the cleats according to your needs and tastes. Use a spirit level to check if the cleats are horizontal and secure the cleats to the frame using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Attaching the floor slats

Attaching the floor slats

Use 1×6 slats to build the floor of the planter. Place the slats equally-spaced and secure them to the cleats by using 1 1/4″ screws. Drill pilot holes before inserting the screws to prevent the wood from splitting.

Fitting the trims

Fitting the trims

In order to enhance the look of the planter, we recommend you to attach 1×4 trims to the top of the planter. Cut both ends of the trims at 45 degrees and secure them to the planter using finishing nails and glue. Leave no gaps between the components and smooth the exposed edges with fine-grit sandpaper.
