This step by step diy woodworking project is about herb garden plans. Before starting the actual construction project, we recommend you to plan everything, as to save money and to keep the costs under control. Adjust the size and the design of the planter boxes to suit your needs. In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.

If you don’t have a rich expertise in woodworking field, you should ask a friend to give you a hand with the project. There are many things that you could go wrong, so make sure you plan everything and invest in quality materials. Select the lumber with attention, making sure the components are perfectly straight and in a very good condition. Use a carpentry square to check if the corners are right-angled. Building a herb garden planter box

Materials

A – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 36″ long, 2 pieces – 28 3/4″ long, 2 pieces – 34 1/4″ long, 1 piece – 71″ long FRAME
B – 5 pieces of 1×4 – 13″ long BOTTOM
C – 2 pieces of 1×8 lumber – 74″ long PLANTER BOX
D – 8 pieces of 1×6 lumber – 16″ long, 2 pieces of 1×8 lumber – 16″ long PLANTER BOX

3 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 10 ft
1 piece of 1×4 lumber – 6 ft
2 pieces of 1×8 lumber – 8 ft
1 piece of 1×6 lumber – 12 ft
2 1/2″ screws
1 1/4″ screws

Building a herb planter box

Building the frame of the herb garden

The first step of the project is to build the main frame of the herb planter box. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components at the rights size and to lock them together tightly using 2 1/2″ screws. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal component and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the vertical posts. Make sure the the corners are square and add glue to the joints.

Fitting the main supports

Next, fit the 2×4 partitions to the structure, as described in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the bottom components and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the supports to create rigid joints. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Place the vertical supports equally-spaced for a professional result.

Installing the bottom of the planters

Next, fit the bottom of the top planter boxes to the structure. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the components and secure them to the vertical supports using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square before inserting the screws.

Building the planter boxes

In order to create the planter boxes, we recommend you to fit the 1×6 slats to both sides of the structure, as described in the diagram. Cut the components at the right size and secure them to the structure using brad nails. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue for a better bond.

Fitting the top plater box

In order to enhance the look of the project, you could make the top planter box of the structure decorative. Therefore, you need to mark the cut lines on the 1×8 slat and get the job done by using a jigsaw. Attach the components to the supports and secure them into place by using finishing nails and glue.

Fitting the bottom planter box

One of the last steps of the project is to build the bottom planter box for the project. Cut the side components out of 1×8 lumber and get the job done by using a jigsaw. Smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Align the edges with great care and lock the components into place with brad nails.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
