How to build a work bench

Building the frames

Building the frames

The first step of the project is to build the frames for the work bench. You will need two frames for the shop project. Cut the 2×4 components at the right dimensions. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 21″ long components and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints.

Attaching the legs

Attaching the legs

The next step of the project is to attach the legs to the bottom frame. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the legs using 2×4 lumber. Clamp the legs to the frame, as shown in the free plans. Make sure the legs are plumb and the frame is perfectly horizontal.

Building the shelf supports

In order to add more storage space to the work bench, we recommend you to build a frame out of 2×2 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 45″ long component and at one end of the 21″ long components. Align everything with attention, making sure the edges are flush. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock everything together tightly.

Clamp the frame to the legs, making sure the corners are right-angled. Drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the frame.

Attaching the tabletop supports

Next, you need to attach the top frame to the work bench. Align everything with attention and clamp the frame to the legs. Drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the top frame.

Build the tabletop out of 3/4″ plywood. Cut the sheet to the right dimensions using a saw and smooth the edges. Use brad nails and glue to lock the plywood sheet to the top of the frame.

Building the shelves

Building the shelves

Build the shelves out of 3/4″ plywood. Use a circular saw to make notches to the four corners of the sheets. Smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Fitting the shelves

Fitting the shelves

Attach the shelves to the frame of the work bench. Use brad nails or 1 1/4″ screws to lock the sheets to the supports. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the structure is rigid.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours. Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue, if necessary.

Smart Tip: Apply a few coats of stain or exterior paint to the components, in order to protect them from decay and water damage. Check out the rest of the projects to see more alternatives.  If you want to download the plans, just click on the GET PDF PLANS button bellow.
