This step by step woodworking project is about wooden rolling tool stand plans. I have designed this simple and small tool stand on caster wheels so you can do a nice upgrade to your workshop. We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Building a rolling benchtop tool stand
Materials
- A – 4 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 20″ long LEGS
- B – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 29″ long, 3 pieces – 14 1/2″ long 2xFRAME
- C – 5 piece of 1×4 lumber – 29″ long SHELF
- D – 5 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 32″ long BENCHTOP
- 4 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 12′
- 2 pieces of 1×4 lumber – 8′
- 2 1/2″ screws
- 1 5/8″ screws
- wood filler , wood glue,

How to build a rolling tool stand
Building the frames
The first step of the project is to build the frames for the rolling tool stand. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to cut the components from 2×4 lumber. Check if the corners are square and align the edges with attention. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to assemble the frames together tightly.
Attaching the legs
Continue the project by attaching the 2×4 legs to the frames. Check if the corners are square, drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the frames.
Assembling the benchtop
Use 2×4 lumber for the benchtop. Cut the components at 32″ and then drill pocket holes, as shown in the diagram. Add glue to the joints, align the edges and insert the 2 1/2″ screws.
Tabletop slats
The next step of the project is to attach the tabletop to the frame of the tool stand. You can either insert screws through the tabletop into the frame, or drill pocket holes through the frame and insert the screws into the benchtop. Irrespective of your choice, make sure you align the edges with attention.
Fitting the caster wheels
Attach the caster wheels to the tool stand. Drill pilot holes and insert the screws to secure the casters to the bottom of the legs.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the components to protect them from the elements and to enhance the look of the tool stand.
