Single Carport with Storage Roof Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about free carport with storage plans. This is PART 2 of the carport with storage project, where I show you how to build the trusses and how to attach them into place In addition, in this article I show you how to build the door for the shed area. We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. How to build a gable roof for a carport with storage

Building the rafters

The first step of the roof project is to build the rafters. Use a miter saw and 2×6 lumber to build the rafters. Smooth the edges with sandpaper for a neat result.

Bottom Chords

Build the bottom rafters from 2×6 lumber and then lay all of them on a level surface. Leave no gaps between the rafters. As you can see in the diagram, make 55 degree cuts to both ends of the beams.

Fitting the gussets

Use 1/2″ plywood for the gussets, using the information from the diagram. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the gussets to the trusses.

Fitting the trusses

Fit the trusses to the top of the structure. Place the trusses every 24″ on center. Use a spirit level to plumb the trusses and lock the into place with rafter ties.

Gable ends

Attach the T1-11 panels to the three gable ends. Cut the panels to the right shape and size and then lock them into place with 6-8d nails. Leave no gaps between the sheets for a professional result.

Assembling the overhangs

Continue the project by assembling the overhangs for the carport. You can easily adjust the width of the overhangs to suit your needs. Drill pilot holes through the rafters and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the blockings.

Fitting the overhangs

Fit the overhnags to the front and to the back of the carport with storage. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the trusses.

Attaching the roof sheets

Cut the panels for the roof from 3/4″ plywood. Fit the sheets to the top of the roof frame and lock them into place with 1 5/8″ screws, every 8″ along the rafters. Make sure you follow the pattern for a professional result. Make sure the joints fall on the middle of the rafters.

Building the roof trims

Use 1×8 lumber for the roof trims. Make the angle cuts to the trims and smooth the edges smooth.

Fitting the roof trims

Fit the trims to the roof of the storage carport. Use 2″ brad nails to lock the trims into place tightly. In addition, you need to attach the trims to the sides of the carport with storage.

Fitting the roofing

You could fit asphalt shingles to protect the shed, as it is a straight forward solution. Therefore, install roofing felt over the roofing sheets, making sure the strips overlap at least 2″. Secure the tar paper to the plywood sheets with roofing staples. Fit the side drip edges over the roofing felt, while the bottom drip edges should be fit under. Place a starting course at the bottom of the roof, before installing the asphalt shingles. Always read the manufacturing instructions before starting the installation, as there are several aspects that differ.

Smart Tip: The first course should star with a 3 tab shingle, the second course with a 2 1/2 tab , the third course with a 2 tab, the forth course with a 1 1/2 tab, the fifth course with a 1 tab, the sixth course with a 1/2 tab. Repeat the process from the beginning, starting with the seventh course. Don’t forget that the shingles should overhang from the drip edge about a 1/4″. In addition, secure the asphalt shingles to the roof decking with tacks.

Fitting the jambs

Fit 1×4 trims around the door opening. Use 2″ nails to lock the jambs around the opening. Align the edges flush, otherwise you won’t be able to fit the door into place tightly.

Building the door

Build the door for the shed area from T1-11 siding and 1×4 trims. Attach the 1×4 trims to the door panel with 1 1/4″ nails and glue.

Fitting the door

Fit the door to the opening and lock it to the jambs with hinges. Install a latch and a handle so you can lock and open the door properly.

Single car carport with storage plans

After assembling the carport with storage, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint and stain over the components to enhance the look of the carport and to protect the components from decay.
