Bike Shed Roof Plans

This step by step diy woodworking project is about bike shed roof plans. This is PART 2 of the bike shed, where I show you how to build the lean to roof. This roof frame is super sturdy and it will also drain the water easily. Remember that you need to read the local building codes before starting the construction, so you comply with the legal requirements. See my other shed plans HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a 4×8 bike shed roof

Back top wall

Back top wall

The first step of the project is to build the top side wall frame. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber at the right dimensions. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 16″ on center and make sure the corners are square. Place 1/2″ plywood between the double studs placed at both ends.

Fit the small wall frame to the top of the side wall. Plumb the wall with a spirit level, drill pilot holes through the bottom plate and insert 3 1/2″ screws, to lock them into place tightly.

Building the rafters

Building the rafters

Use 2×4 lumber for the rafters. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to make birdmouths cuts in the rafters. Mark the cut lines to the rafters and then get the job done with a saw.

Fit the rafters to the top of the shed. Place the rafters every 16″ on center for a professional result. Use rafters ties to lock the rafters into place tightly.

Back wall top panel siding

Fit the T1-11 siding sheets to the tall side wall of the shed. Align the edges with attention and leave no gaps between the components. Insert 2″ nails to lock the sheets into to the framing, every 8″.

Fit the siding sheets to the front of the shed. As you can see in the diagram, you need to make a cut so you can fit the sheets into place properly.

Next, fit the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the top of the shed. Align the edges with attention and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the sheets into place tightly.

Fitting the side roof trims

Fitting the side roof trims

Fit a 1×6 trim to the front and back of the shed. Make the angle cuts and then lock the trims into place with 2 1/2″ screws.

Next, you should install the shingles to the roof of the large shed. Start with the bottom of the roof, by fitting the first course, as in the image. Use roofing tacks to secure the shingles to the roofing sheets.

Start the first course with a full tab, the second with 2 1/2 tabs, the third with 2 tabs, the forth with 1 1/2 tabs, the fifth with 1 tab, the sixth with half tab and the seventh with a 3 tabs. Secure the shingles with roofing tacks.
