8×16 Shed with Porch Roof Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about free 8×16 garden shed with porch plans. This is PART 2 of the project, where I show you how to build the gable roof for the shed with porch. This is a unique shed design, so make sure you follow these steps so you end up with a professionally built shelter. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

How to build a roof for a shed with porch

Building the rafters

Building the rafters

The first step of the project is to build the rafters for the shed roof. Mark the cut lines on the 2×6 beams and then get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and make birdmouths to the rafters, so they can fit into place tightly.

Bottom rafters

Bottom rafters

Next, build the bottom rafters for the trusses. Cut both ends of the rafters at 30 degrees, by using a miter saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and then lay it on a level surface, next to the common rafters.

Truss supports

Truss supports

Use 2×4 lumber for the for the supports. Cut one end of the supports at 60 degrees, then drill pocket holes at both ends. Fit the supports to the trusses and lock them into place with 2 1/2″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components for a professional result.

Gussets

Gussets

Use 1/2″ plywood for the gussets. Cut the gussets at the right dimensions and then attach them over the joints. Use 1 5/8″ screws to secure the gussets to the joints. These are the trusses that are placed at both ends of the shed.

Common trusses

Common trusses

Build the rest of the trusses for the roof of the shed following the instructions in the diagram.

Fitting the trusses

Fitting the trusses

Fit the trusses to the top of the shed, as shown in the diagram. Place the trusses every 24″ on center and use a spirit level to plumb them perfectly vertical. Use rafter ties to lock the trusses to the top plates and to the support beams.

Gable end panels

Gable end panels

Cut the panels for the front and back gable ends of the shed. Mark the cut lines on the T1-11 siding sheets and then get the job done with a saw. Fit the panels to the shed, align the edges flush and insert 6-8d nails to lock them into place tightly. Insert the nails every 8″ along the rafters.

Building the overhangs

Building the overhangs

Continue the project by assembling the overhangs for the gable shed. Drill pilot holes through the rafters and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the blockings.
