8×16 Shed Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about free 8×16 shed plans. This shed is the ideal choice if you are a homeowner and you want extra storage space. These detailed instructions and step by step diagrams will help you build this shed in one week, while keeping the costs under control. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Building a 8×16 shed

Materials

• A – 3 pieces of 4×4 lumber – 192″ long SKIDS
• B – 2 pieces of 2×6 lumber – 192″ long, 13 pieces – 93″ long FRAME
• C – 4 pieces of 3/4″ plywood – 48″x96″ long FLOOR
• D – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 192″ long, 1 piece – 185″ long, 12 pieces – 81″ long, 2 pieces – 36″ long, 3 pieces – 34″ long, 4 pieces of 2×6 lumber – 39″ long SIDE WALL WITH WINDOW
• E – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 192″ long, 1 piece – 185″ long, 11 pieces – 81″ long SIDE WALL

How to build a 8×16 shed with gable roof

Assembling the floor frame

The next step of the project is to build the floor frame for the 8×16 shed. Drill pilot holes through the 2×6 rim joists and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Place the joists every 16″ on center and make sure the corners are right angled.

Attacking the skids

The next step of the project is to lay the skids on the ground and attach the frame on top. Align the edges flush, making sure you place the skids equally-spaced. Use rafter ties to secure the skids to the floor frame.

Floor sheets

Cut and fit the ¾” plywood sheets to the floor of the shed. Align the edges flush and leave no gaps between them. Insert 1 5/8” screws, every 8” along the framing, to secure the sheets to the frame.

Side wall – Frame

Build the plain side wall for the shed from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the top and bottom plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 24″ on center and make sure the corners are square. Align the edges flush and make sure joints are rigid.

Side wall with siding – Frame

Framing the side wall with window it is a little bit more complex. As you can easily notice on the plans, you need to fit double header to the window opening. In this manner, the side wall with window will have rigidity.

Fit 1/2″ plywood between the double headers.

Front wall – Frame

Frame the front wall for the 8×16 shed from 2×4 lumber and 2×6 lumber for the double header. As you can easily notice in the plans, the door opening is large enough for an easy access to the interior. In this manner, you can store large items in the shed.

Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Take accurate measurements for a professional result. Fit 1/2″ plywood between the double headers.

Back wall – Frame

Last but not least, you need to frame the back wall for the garden shed, in the same manner described above. Use the right techniques for assembling the wall frame properly.

Side wall with window – Siding

Fit the T1-11 siding panels to the side wall with window. Mark the cut lines on the sheet that goes around the window opening. Drill a starting hole and then get the job done with a jigsaw. Smooth the edges flush for a professional result. Align the sheets into place and lock them to the frame with 6-8d nails.

Front wall – Siding

Cut the panels for the front wall at the right size and shape. Attach the sheets to the front wall frame with 6-8d nails. Insert the nails every 8″ along the framing.

Side wall – Siding

Fit the sheets to the plain side wall of the shed, using the same techniques described above.

Back wall – Siding

Fit the T1-11 siding to the back wall of the shed, as well.
