This step by step woodworking project is about free 16×20 pole barn roof plans. This is PART 2 of the pole barn project, where I show you how to build the rafters and the front double doors. This pole barn is ideal if you want to shelter large items while keeping the costs down. My plans come with step by step instructions and you can easily adjust all the dimensions to suit your needs. We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. How to build a gable pole barn roof
Building the rafters
The first step of the project is to build the rafters for the pole barn. Cut both the bottom and regular rafters from 2×6 lumber. Use a miter saw to make the angle cuts easily.
Truss supports
Assemble the trusses on a level surface, so you won’t leave any gaps between the components. In addition, you need to attach 2×4 supports to the trusses, so you enhance the rigidity of the frame.
Fitting the plywood gussets
Attach the 1/2″ plywood gussets to the joints. Cut the gussets and then attach them over the joints. Use 1 1/4″ screws to lock the gussets over the joints.
Fitting the trusses
Fit the trusses to the top plates of the barn shed. Place the trusses every 24″ on center and plumb them with a spirit level. Use rafter ties to secure the trusses to the top plates of the side walls.
Gable end panels
The next step of the project is to attach the T1-11 siding panels to the gable ends of the pole barn. Use 6-8d nails to secure the panels to the framing.
Assembling the overhangs
Fitting the overhangs
Attach the overhangs to the front and to the back of the pole barn. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.
Fitting the roof sheets
Attach the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the top of the pole barn. Leave no gaps between the sheets and align the edges with attention tightly. Drill pilot holes through the plywood and then secure it to the rafters with 1 5/8″ screws, every 8″ along the rafters.
Fitting the roofing
The next step of the woodworking project is to cover the roof with felt. As you can see in the image, you need to make sure the strips of roofing felt overlap at least 2”. In addition, you have to lock the tar paper to the plywood sheets with staples. Attach the asphalt shingles to the roof, making sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Fitting the jambs
Attach 2×4 jambs around the double doors opening. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.
Building the doors
Assemble the doors from two sheets of T1-11 siding and 2×4 lumber. Use glue and 2″ screws to assemble the doors properly.
Fitting the doors
Fit the doors to the front opening and then secure them to the jambs with hinges. In addition, you need to install a latch and a handle so you can lock the doors into place.
Free Pole Barn Plans
Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to enhance the look of the barn shed. Moreover, you can fit soffit to the front, back and sides of the pole barn.
