Wooden Loveseat Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about wooden loveseat plans. This project is ideal for any patio, as it is both easy to build and has a really nice appearance. If you want to have a complete set, then I recommend you to add a table and two chairs. You need 2x2s, 1x4s and 1x6s for this project. My plans come with step by step instructions and you can easily adjust all the dimensions to suit your needs. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.

Building an outdoor loveseat

Building the sides

Building the sides

The first step of the project is to build the sides for the wooden loveseat. As you can notice in the plans, you need to use 2×2 lumber for the legs and armrests. Use 2×6 lumber for the side supports. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 2×6 beams and insert 2 1/2″ pocket screws into the legs. Make sure the corners are square, check if the edges are flush and add waterproof glue to the joints.

Assembling the loveseat sofa

Assembling the loveseat sofa

After building the sides for the loveseat, I recommend you to assemble the frame of the outdoor sofa. That is why, you need to build the rest of the supports from 2×6 lumber and the backrest support from 2×2 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and lock them into place with 2 1/2″ pocket screws,.

Fitting the cleats

Fitting the cleats

Build the cleats from 2×4 lumber. Clamp the cleats to the frame of the loveseat, after aligning everything with attention. Drill pilot holes through the cleats and insert 2 1/2″ screws to create durable joints between the components.

Assembling the backrest

Assembling the backrest

Continue the project by assembling the backrest from 1×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical slats and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock everything together tightly. Add glue to the joints and make sure the edges are flush.

Attaching the backrest to the sofa

Attaching the backrest to the sofa

Fit the backrest to the back of the outdoor sofa. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes through the backrest and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock it into place tightly.

Fitting the support slats

Fitting the support slats

Attach the 1×4 slats to the bottom of the sofa. Place a 2″ wood block between the slats to create even gaps. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws to secure the slats into place tightly.

Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of stain or paint to enhance the look of the sofa and to protect the elements from decay. Fit the cushions
