How to build a porch swing bench

Building the seat supports

Building the seat supports

Firs of all, build the seat supports for the porch swing bench. Build the seat supports from 2×4 lumber. Build 2 pieces of each component, as shown in the diagram.

To make the notches for the middle seat supports, you need to make parallel cuts with a circular saw and then remove the excess with a chisel. Smooth the recess with sandpaper for a professional result.

Next, build the backrest supports from 2×4 lumber. Make the round cuts with a jigsaw. Build two pieces of each component, as shown in the diagram.

Assembling the supports

Assembling the supports

The next step of the project is to assemble the supports with pocket screws, as shown in the diagram. Drill pocket holes and align the edges with attention. Add glue to the joints and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them together tightly.

Assembling the porch swing frame

Fit the supports to a level surface (fit the supports with notches to the middle) and then attach the 2×4 stretchers. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the stretchers and then secure them to the end supports with 2 1/2″ screws. Drill pilot holes through the stretchers and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the middle supports.

Fitting the slats

Fitting the slats

Fit the 1×2 slats to the frame of the porch swing. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes and insert 1 1 /4″ screws, so you can lock them into place tightly. You can even round the exposed edges with a router before fitting the slats into place, for an exquisite look. Moreover, you could leave space between the slats.

Armrest supports
