Simple Small Flower Planter Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about wooden small flower planter plans. This super simple flower planter box has a nice design and it can be built in a few hours by any person with basic tools and materials. Make sure you invest in weather resistant lumber (cedar, redwood), as the components will be exposed to the weather elements. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a small planter

Building the base

Building the base

The first step of the project is to build the legs for the planter box. As you can see in the diagram, use a saw to make the cuts for the 1×4 components. Align the edges with attention, add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.

Building the end slats

Building the end slats

Use 1×6 lumber for the end slats. Mark the cut lines and then use a jigsaw to make the cuts. Smooth the edges with sandpaper for a professional result.

Use 1×6 lumber for the bottom of the planter. Use 1 5/8″ screws to secure the end components into place. Drill pilot holes before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.

Fitting the side slats

Fitting the side slats

Fit 1×4 slats to the sides of the planter box. Align the edges with attention and use 2″ nails and glue to secure the slats into place tightly.

Fitting the legs

Fitting the legs

Fill the legs to the bottom of the planter box. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock them into place tightly. Align the edges with attention and leave no gaps between the components.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes and the dents with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Smooth the edges, as well.  You can staple landscaping fabric inside the planter box, so you can protect the wood from the elements.
