8×8 Greenhouse Plans – Step by Step Guide

This step by step woodworking project is about 8×8 greenhouse plans – step by step guide. If you want to grow your own vegetables, you should check out my latest design. This 8×8 greenhouse is large enough for a small family, especially if you want to grow vegetables as a hobby. This greenhouse has two large doors for an easy access to the interior and four vents, so you can cool down the air.

Make sure you select a proper location for the greenhouse as the plants need to receive a lot of natural light, even in the winter days. Moreover, you have to make sure you comply with the local building codes, if any. In addition, you can adjust the size of the greenhouse to suit your needs. The stakes will hold the frame of the greenhouse into place, if you live in an area with strong winds.

Building a 8×8 greenhouse

Building the beams

Building the beams

The first step of the project is to build the beams for the base of the greenhouse. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to make notches to both ends of the beams. Make parallel cuts to the marked areas and then remove the excess with a chisel. Smooth the surface with sandpaper.

Fitting the stakes

Fitting the stakes

Assemble the base for the 8×8 greenhouse, as shown in the free plans. Make sure the corners are square and lock them together with screws. Drill pilot holes through the beams and insert 3 1/2″ screws to lock everything tightly. Fit the base to the selected location and then lock it into place with 2×2 stakes. The stakes will lock the base into place tightly.

Side wall frames

Side wall frames

Use 2×4 lumber for the side walls of the wood greenhouse. First of all, you need to cut all the components to the appropriate size using a miter saw. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Make sure the corners are square and check if the edges are flush. As you can easily see in the diagrams, you need to frame the vents, as you can cool the greenhouse during the hot summer days.

Fro and back walls

Front and back walls

Continue the project by framing the front and back walls for the 8×8 greenhouse. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs.

Assembling the greenhouse frame

Assembling the greenhouse frame

Fit the wall frames to the base and then use a spirit level to make sure they are plumb. Drill pilot holes though the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the base. In addition, you need to lock the adjacent walls together by drilling pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours.  Check if there are protruding screws and fix the issue if necessary. Check out PART 2 of the project, so you learn how to build the roof, doors and vents for the greenhouse.

Smart Tip: Apply a few coats of stain or exterior paint to the components, in order to protect them from decay and water damage.
