Building an office desk

Building the frame of the desk

Building the frame of the desk

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the office desk. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to cut the components out of 3/4″ plywood. Take accurate measurements and invest in high quality materials. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues before locking them together. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical components. Align the components with attention and make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the 1 1/4″ screws into place.

Build the shelf out of 3/4″ plywood and smooth the edges before fitting it into place. Make sure the corners are square and place a spirit level on top of the shelf before locking it into place, in order to make sure it is perfectly horizontal. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to the joints in order to create a rigid structure.

Fitting the side supports

Continue the woodworking project by attaching the side components to the structure. Cut the components at the right size and drill pocket holes at both ends. Fit the components into place and insert 1 1/4″ screws in order to create rigid joints. In addition, we recommend you to add waterproof glue to the joints and to remove the excess by using a damp cloth.

Fit the middle shelf in order to enhance the storage space for your office desk. Drill pocket holes along the sides of the plywood piece and fit it into place, as described in the diagram. Make sure the corners are square, align the components with attention and secure the shelf to the structure by using 1 1/4″ screws.

Build the base of the desk out of 1×2 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the short components and secure them to the perpendicular slats by insert 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the galvanized screws. Drill pocket holes along the bottom edges of the base and center it to the desk, as seen in the image. Insert 1 1/4″ screws into the bottom of the desk and add glue to create a durable bond between the components.

Building the legs

Building the legs

After building the storage unit for the office desk, you need to make the L-shaped side of the structure. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to build the legs out of 2×2 lumber, as described in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the top and bottom components and secure them to the vertical legs by using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled.
