How to build a kitchen table

This step by step diy project is about how to build a kitchen table. Building a large table for your kitchen with a classic design is a complex project that requires proper plans and the right woodworking skills. If you want to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to plan every aspect of the project from the very beginning, including the design and the materials you are going to use.

There are many designs you could choose from when building a wooden table for your kitchen, so we strongly recommend you to take into account all alternatives before starting the actual construction project. Make sure you adjust both the designs and the size of the wooden table to match the style and the configuration of the dinning room. Choose adequate materials, making sure the lumber is a great condition.

We strongly recommend you to use a good saw when adjusting the size of the components. Take accurate measurements and lock the components together with screws and wood glue. Work with attention and with great care, if you want to prevent costly mistakes. It is essential to drill pocket holes before inserting the screws, in order to prevent the wood from splitting. Buidling the sides of the table

Building the frame of the table

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the kitchen table. As you can see in the plans, we recommend you to use 2×4 lumber and to assemble the components tightly by using pocket screws. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the aprons and insert the 2 1/2″ screws into the legs, after adding glue and checking if the corners are right-angled.

Continue the project by attaching the side aprons to the components. Use a good spirit level to check if the legs are perfectly plumb and if the aprons are horizontal. In addition, the corners should be perfectly square before locking the aprons to the framing with galvanized screws.

Fitting the tabletop supports

Fitting the tabletop supports

The next step of the project is to fit the tabletop supports between the both sides of the frame, as shown in the plans. Cut the supports at the right size and lock them between the aprons with screws. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and insert the screws into the aprons, after placing them equally spaced.

Attaching the tabletop

In order to lock the tabletop components in a professional manner, we recommend you to pay attention to these instructions. First of all, we recommend you to lock the 2×6 slats together by using pocket holes. Drill pilot holes along the edges of the slats and insert the screws after adding wood glue to the joints.

Smart Tip: Attach the tabletop to the frame and align properly, as shown in the image. Drill pocket holes through the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the tabletop. In addition, you could also add glue if you want to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, you need to install the end slats to the tabletop of the kitchen table, as shown in the plans. Afterwards, check if all the components are locked into place properly and make adjustments if necessary. Smooth the exposed edges and the wooden surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper, along the wood grain.

Smart Tip: Apply a few coats of paint or stain to the components, in order to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the kitchen table. If you want to get this plan as a PDF file, please take a look over the GET PDF PLANS button bellow. Thank you for the support!
