Make sure you check out my top projects, for a healthy dose of building inspiration.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy quality lumber, such as pine, cedar or redwood. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Double Chair Bench Plans

Building the legs

Building the legs

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the legs for the double chair bench. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you have to cut both ends of the legs at 75 degrees (set the miter at 15 degrees). Use sandpaper to smooth the edges of the legs.

Side legs

Side legs

Build the front legs from 2×4 lumber, as well. Then, you need to lay the legs on a level surface and space them as shown in the diagram.

Assembling the sides

Assembling the sides

Build the armrest supports from 2×4 lumber. Cut one end of the 2×4 supports at 75 degrees and smooth the edges with sandpaper. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs. Add waterproof glue to the joints for a durable bond.

Building the frame of seat

Building the frame of seat

Assemble the frame of the bench from 2×4 lumber. Cut the components at the right dimensions shown in the diagram and align everything with attention. Drill pilot holes through the front and back supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the 18″ slats. As you can notice in the diagram, cut one end of the 18″ supports at 75 degrees.

Assembling the frame of the bench

After assembling the seat frame and the sides, you need to lock them together with screws. Drill pilot holes through the seat frame and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs. Use a carpentry square to make sure the corners are right-angled. Use a spirit level to check if the sides are plumb and to check if the seat is horizontal.

Backrest supports

Backrest supports

Build the supports for the backrest from 2×4 lumber. If you want to enhance the look of the bench, you could round the exposed corner with a jigsaw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Fitting the backrest supports

Fitting the backrest supports

Fit the supports to the back of the bench, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the bottom of the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the frame of the seat. Try to insert at least two screws for every joint. In addition, make sure the edges are perfectly aligned, so you won’t have any problem when attaching the backrest slats.

Building the armrests

Building the armrests

Build the armrests from 2×4 lumber. As you can see in the free outdoor bench plans, you need to round one end of the armrests with a jigsaw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper for a professional result.

Fitting the armrests

Fitting the armrests

Attach the armrests to the bench frame, as shown in the image. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the frame. Leave no gaps between the components for a professional result.

Fitting the seat slats

Fitting the seat slats

Attach the 1×4 slats to the seat of the double chair bench. Place a piece of 1/2″ plywood between the slats for a professional result and for consistent gaps. Drill pilot holes through the slats and secure them to the frame with 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure you countersink the head of the screws, so they are at the same level with the slats.

Front table supports

Front table supports

Build the frame for the table from 2×4 lumber. After cutting the components at the right dimensions from 2×4 lumber, you should lock them to the bench with 2 1/2″ screws. Drill pilot holes first, so you prevent the wood from splitting. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.

Table support

Table support

Drill pocket holes at both end of the back support and secure them to the backrest supports with 2 1/2″ screws.

Fitting the tabletop slats

Fitting the tabletop slats

Cut several 1×6 slats and attach them to the table frame, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes and secure the slats to the supports with 1 1/4″ screws. Place a 1/4″ piece of plywood between the slats to create even gaps between the slats.

Fitting the back slats

Fitting the back slats

Attach the 1×4 slats to the backrest supports. Place a piece of 1/2″ plywood between the slats to get even gaps. Drill pilot holes through the slats and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the supports. Align the edges until they are flush.

Double Chair Bench Plans

Double Chair Bench Plans

I have always loved this outdoor furniture design so I took the initiative to create these free plans, so anyone can build one without much worries. Building this double chair bench with table is a straight forward process. Just print the cut list and make all the components at the right dimensions. Afterwards, it is all just a question of hours to assemble the bench.

Fill the holes and dents with wood putty. Smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper, including the edges and the wood putty. Apply a few coats of stain and then apply a few healthy coats of spar varnish, to seal everything. If you will place the outdoor patio bench in your garden, you just need to protect the wood from sun and decay.

Smart Tip: Make sure you choose quality components that suit your needs and tastes. Adjust the size of the bench before starting the project. Take a look over the rest of my outdoor projects HERE
